Dear Nigerians, can we have a little conversation?
Because what exactly is going on with this heat?
You finish bathing, and before you've even decided what to wear, you're already sweating. You reach for your body lotion, look at the weather, look at your skin, and suddenly that lotion doesn't seem so appealing anymore.
Then there's your face!
You've washed it, applied your skincare products and stepped outside feeling fresh. A few minutes later, your forehead is shining, sweat is gathering around your nose, and you're reaching for tissue to dab your face. And just when you think you've sorted yourself out, here comes another round of sweating!
At this point, some of us are probably wondering whether our skincare routines need to go on holiday until further notice.
But wait! Before you abandon your moisturiser or start blaming every skin concern on the weather, let's talk about something that's been making headlines: El Niño.
So, what is going on with this heat?
You may have heard people talking about El Niño recently. No, it’s not the name of another person making life difficult for Nigerians.
El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon that happens when parts of the tropical Pacific Ocean become warmer than usual. This affects atmospheric circulation and can influence weather patterns around the world.
Nigeria is among the countries watching its potential effects. In its August 2026 update, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) confirmed the development of a strong El Niño event and highlighted possible changes to rainfall patterns across the country.
That said, El Niño does not automatically mean every part of Nigeria will experience the same weather. Our local weather is influenced by several factors, so it’s important to follow forecasts for your area.
But whatever is behind the particular heat you’re experiencing, your skin still has to deal with it.
And that brings us to the real conversation.
What does all this heat mean for your skin?
Sweat is not a substitute for moisture: Here is where things get interesting. Your skin can feel sweaty on the surface and still lack adequate moisture. Sweat and skin hydration are not the same thing.
So, if your skin feels tight, rough or uncomfortable after bathing, the answer may not be to skip moisturiser because the weather is hot. Instead, consider switching to a lighter moisturiser if your usual one feels too heavy. Apply it to slightly damp skin after bathing to help retain moisture. Your skin does not need to feel greasy to be moisturised. All that wiping may be irritating your skin: Let’s be honest: when sweat starts gathering on your face, you are not always waiting patiently for it to dry. You reach for a handkerchief, tissue, towel or whatever is closest.
The problem is that repeatedly rubbing your skin can cause irritation, especially when combined with heat, sweat and friction. Wiping can also remove some skincare products from the surface.
Instead of rubbing your face like you’re trying to erase a mistake, gently dab away the sweat with a clean towel or tissue. And if you use sunscreen, remember that sweating and towel-drying can reduce its protection. Reapply according to the product instructions, particularly after heavy sweating.Skipping moisturiser may not solve the problem: We know. The weather is hot enough already. The last thing you want is to feel as though you have added another layer to it.
But completely abandoning moisturiser may leave your skin feeling dry or uncomfortable, particularly if you use cleansers or treatments that can dry it out. The better approach is to adjust your routine, not automatically abandon it.
If your current body lotion feels too rich, try a lighter formula. If your skin is comfortable with your existing moisturiser, there may be no need to change it simply because the weather is hot. Your skin's needs matter more than following a one-size-fits-all routine.
How to care for your skin when the heat is doing the most
You do not need a completely new shelf of skincare products. Start with these simple adjustments:
1. Keep your cleansing gentle: Wash away sweat, dirt and excess oil without scrubbing or repeatedly washing your face throughout the day.
2. Choose a moisturiser that feels comfortable: Oily skin can still benefit from moisturiser. Look for a lightweight, non-comedogenic option if you are prone to clogged pores.
3. Make sunscreen part of your daytime routine: Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Reapply as directed, especially when sweating heavily or spending time outdoors.
4. Pay attention to your body, too: Your arms, legs and other exposed areas need care just as much as your face. Use a body moisturiser that suits your skin and the weather.
5. Stay hydrated and take heat seriously: Drink water regularly, seek shade where possible and limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. Skincare is important, but protecting your overall health comes first.
So, should you give up your moisturiser because of the heat?
Absolutely not by default.
The goal is not to force yourself to use a product that feels uncomfortable. It is to understand what your skin needs and find a routine you can maintain in the weather you actually live in.
If your current moisturiser feels too heavy, explore a lighter option. If your skin is getting irritated, simplify your routine rather than adding more products. And if you are experiencing persistent or severe skin problems, consider speaking with a dermatologist.
Because the heat may be doing too much, but your skincare routine does not have to become complicated.
